Search optimisation

What is "Search Engine Optimisation"?

"Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic." (Wikipedia)

So what does that mean?

It means that you're putting your best foot forward in order to be recognised as a credible, authoritative website by search engines. It means that you're increasing the likelihood of your website being found by potential customers. It also means that a lot of hard work and time has gone into making your website the best it can be.

So what you can do?

1) Start afresh - when we build a new website for your business we can develop a plan to make sure we have the foundations in place, right from the beginning. Then we can work with you to develop a plan for managing your online business over the longer term.

2) Do a refresh - we'll make an assessment of your current website and provide a series of recommendations. We'll map out how we can implement those recommendations and provide guidance on what areas are achievable and how this can be managed.

Here's a sample of on-site SEO activities to complete:

  • 1. Set up Google webmaster tools to learn and fix any errors that may be occurring or penalised by search engines
  • 2. Keyword research - evaluate keywords that can be used in creating new pages or optimising existing pages
  • 3. Rewrite mega tags with targeted keywords for main pages + additional pages. Also including the targeted local area.
  • 4. Image optimisation - add ALT attributes to image tags to let search engines know what the image is about
  • 5. Apply 'no follow' attributes to unimportant links to prevent link juice flowing through
  • 6. Generate an XML sitemap and submit to google to educate google about your site structure
  • 7. Create an image sitemap file and submit it to Google
  • 8. Set up robots.txt - to restrict crawling where it's not needed
  • 9. Provide best practice to write copy for both human readers and search engines
  • 10. Apply H1 heading tags to emphasize the headings as targeted keywords
  • ... and more
